Getting the old concrete out is half the job
Saw cutting clean lines, breaking out and hauling off old slabs, and regrading what is underneath before anything new goes down.
Cutting a clean line
When only part of a slab is coming out, the line it comes out on decides how the finished job looks. A saw cut gives you a straight, full depth edge to pour against. Breaking to a ragged edge gives you a feathered joint that chips and a seam you will see forever.

Knowing what is in the slab before the blade goes in
Under and inside a slab there can be post tension cables, conduit, water lines, radiant heat, and reinforcement. Cutting a post tension cable is dangerous, not merely expensive. On any slab with an unknown history, the sensible sequence is to find out first: drawings, a scan, or a conversation with whoever built it.
This is one of the places where a cheap quote is a warning. The saving comes from skipping the step that stops somebody getting hurt.
Demolition and haul off
Broken concrete is heavy and there is more of it than people expect. A four inch driveway slab is roughly a ton and a half for every hundred square feet, so a modest two car driveway is fifteen to twenty tons of debris to load and take away.
It goes on a truck the same day where the job allows, and to a recycler rather than a hole in the ground where one is available. Clean concrete gets crushed into aggregate and used again, which is both cheaper and better than landfilling it.
A customer on our profile makes a point of the clean up: no mess left behind, extremely clean job. On a demolition that is a deliberate choice, not a coincidence.
The grading nobody sees
Once the old concrete is off, you are looking at the reason it failed. This is the moment to fix it: recompact the base, cut the grade so water leaves, deal with the downspout that was washing fines out from under the corner, add stone where the fill is soft.
Skid steer work and grading is part of what we do and it shows in our own job photos. It is also the part that costs a bit more on the estimate and saves the whole slab. Pouring a new driveway onto the base that destroyed the last one is the most common expensive mistake in this trade.
Removal on its own
Not every removal is followed by a pour. Taking out a redundant slab, an old shed pad, a set of steps, or a strip of driveway that is being turned back into lawn is a job in its own right, and it includes hauling the debris and leaving the ground graded and ready for topsoil rather than as a crater.
